Published 12:19 PM EDT Jul 5, 2018 The folks at the Milwaukee County Zoo have been super busy the last several months. Busy unveiling lots of new stuff — a river otter exhibit, a new parking lot and entrance, restaurants and plans for a new elephant exhibit. And busy maintaining all the best of the old stuff at the zoo — all those nostalgic favorites we all remember from our own childhood visits. For Milwaukee families, all the new stuff can seem a bit overwhelming, especially if you always try to fit your traditional favorites into your visits. If a trip to the zoo is on your summer to-do list (and it should be), this will help you out — a plan for how to integrate the new stuff, along with the best of the old, into your day. (And, I promise, you can fit it all in.

I did all this stuff on a recent trip to the zoo with my kids, and we got it all done within about four hours.) Something old — the Zoo train. Zoological Society of Milwaukee/ The train is something that is such an obvious thing to do at the zoo that it can, ironically, get overlooked on your regular visits. This is something I realized as I sat down on the train with my 13-year-old and 10-year-old daughters. My 10-year-old, Wendy, thanked me for taking them on the train and said, 'I'm so excited to do this.

I've never been on the train!' My 13-year-old, Alex, and I stared at Wendy in shocked silence, and I realized that the train is one of those things that you do so often throughout the years that you think it's okay to skip when you come to the zoo. And, in our case, that happened so often that we hadn't actually done the train ride since Wendy was about 2 — and too young to remember it.

For

If that sounds like your family, this is the year to make sure you don't miss it. It's the train's 60th anniversary, and the zoo is celebrating by making the ride even more interesting for everyone. Have your kids keep a look out for hand-carved wooden sculptures depicting Wisconsin wildlife placed throughout the woods on your ride. We noticed the deer, badger and bald eagle. There's also a musky, snake, butterfly and wolf. Something new — the river otters In May, the zoo unveiled a second entrance, a new second parking lot and a new exhibit to highlight the whole area — Otter Passage. Amy Schwabe Definitely take the time to see the new exhibit.

Kids love watching the playful new residents as they swim underwater, go down their water slides and dig in their habitat. Plus, there's a cool treehouse area kids can go in to watch the otters, and Kohl's Wild Theater actors come around to do some otter-themed theatrics. RELATED: The river otter exhibit is going to be your kids' new favorite thing at the Milwaukee County Zoo Something old — the Mold-a-Rama It's a pretty good sign that an activity is well-loved when everyone you talk to brings it up unprompted as a must-do. Like when my father-in-law found out I was taking my daughters to the zoo, and started telling stories about how his kids always got Mold-a-Rama souvenirs when they went to the zoo 20 years ago.

And, like when my husband got home from work, saw a Mold-a-Rama elephant sitting on the counter, grinned and immediately picked it up to smell the signature plastic smell (a smell I don't have to try to describe if you grew up in Milwaukee). Amy Schwabe When you take a trip to the zoo, you've gotta poll your kids on what their favorite animal is and keep your eye out for one of the mold-a-rama kiosks.

Then, after you pay just $3 (and the machines take credit cards now), you can all watch in fascination as the mold makes your souvenir, then take out the wonderfully warm animal, hold it upside down for a few minutes as it firms up, and then smell that sweet, sweet, plasticy smell. There are currently 13 mold-a-ramas at the zoo, all stationed near their exhibits. The traditional animals are typically there all the time, but a few are usually switched out for the special exhibits (which is why there are three dinosaurs at the moment). Here they are:. lion.

gorilla. bat. polar bear. elephant. giraffe.

monkey. alligator. tiger. hippo.

stegosauraus. T.

Rex. tracheodon Something new — A baby animal tour Babies are pretty much the definition of new, and a tour of all the zoo's baby animals is sure to put a smile on your kids' faces.

After all, young people love young animals, right? And the baby animals are so, so cute! Amy Schwabe The zoo has quite a few cuties this summer, starting with the river otters themselves, who are only a year old. There's also Maya, the baby giraffe, who was born in May and Milo, the harbor seal pup, who was born just a few weeks later. There are also a few other babies who probably won't be on exhibit quite yet, but are definitely worth looking forward to. Gordy the groundhog was just born in April and is getting used to his new digs at the zoo over in the Family Farm animal encounters building.

He's a bit too rambunctious to be part of the shows at the moment, but zookeepers are confident he'll be ready to take center stage for Groundhog Day in February. Amy Schwabe And, over in the Family Farm petting zoo, there are three baby goats that were just born in May, right around the time of the royal wedding, which explains their names — Duchess, Princess Fiona and Princess Beatrice. The goats are typically not brought out into the petting zoo until they're about a year old — both because they're little enough that they might escape, and because they're just so darn cute that the keepers are concerned visitors won't be able to help but pick them up. Something old — The family farm Speaking of the family farm, that's definitely a place to stop with your kids. Amy Schwabe And, of course, there's the playground.

You know you won't be able to bypass the playground once your kids see it, and, frankly, why even try? It's a great place to give your kids the opportunity to run around and decompress for awhile. Something new — The food A lot of the hype over the new food offerings at the zoo has been geared toward adults. Enjoying a beer near the bear exhibits in the new Bear Garden? Pretty brilliant.

RELATED: Milwaukee's newest beer garden is in the zoo, with lots of craft beer RELATED: The zoo's restaurant, Bean Sprouts, caters to families with fun, healthy, kid-focused food But there's new stuff for kids too, including the hot pretzels and root beer floats at the Bear Garden. Plus, right next door is a cheese food truck. Grilled cheese, cheese fries and mac and cheese? Yeah, your kids will be happy with those choices. Submitted Photo Also, there's still the novelty of Bean Sprouts, which opened last year in the Family Farm. It's a restaurant with food that's specifically made for kids — sandwiches cut into monster shapes, pizza toppings arranged into animal shapes.

Oh, and the offerings are all pretty healthy, and, for anyone with nut allergies, everything is peanut-free. Something old (and also new) — The dinosaur exhibit How to classify the zoo's special exhibit, 'Dinosaurs! A Jurassic Journey'? All those animatronic dinosaurs hanging out in a forested area of the zoo — well, it's old because they're dinosaurs, and it's old because the dinosaurs were here three years ago.

But, they're new because these guys have just been here since May, and will only be here till September. Also, it's new-to-you if your kids are young enough to have never seen it before, and it's new if, as is the case with my daughter Wendy, your child was young enough to be terrified of the dinosaurs last time they were here and is now at the age where she's telling you tons of facts about dinosaurs during your trek through the exhibit.

Amy Schwabe $3 per person will get you into the special exhibit where you'll see life-sized replicas of dinosaurs that move, make noise and even spray water. Oh, and on the way out, you'll see a dino that only has half of its 'skin' on. The point, of course, is to show how the robotic dinosaurs are made. But, it's also pretty perfect for a ten-year-old sense of humor, as Wendy pointed out, 'Oh, this guy is from the Robodocius era. You know, when they had robot dinosaurs.' RELATED: Milwaukee zoo's dinosaur exhibit comes alive with flowers, plants and one avocado tree Something unavoidable — a gift shop visit Okay, if you have kids, you know you have to do one more thing before you leave the zoo.

The same thing you have to do before you leave every museum, amusement park and aquarium you've ever been to. You have to go to the gift shop. Even if you don't buy anything (or if you just buy a little something because you've already bought that handy-dandy mold-a-rama animal), there are four gift shops to pick from — the main one near the main entrance, the flamingo gift shop near the flamingos, the dinosaur gift shop near the dinosaur exhibit and the new river otter gift shop at Otter Passage. Think about buying something that reminds you and your kids of all the great things there are to do at the zoo — old and new.

At today's 'Gather Round' event at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted some new features that are coming to the HomePod through a software update set to be released next Monday. The HomePod will gain a number of new features with the software update, which is going to come alongside iOS 12, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5. Search for your favorite songs by lyrics using Siri. Create multiple timers. Make and receive phone calls right from the HomePod.

Ping your iPhone or any of your Apple devices to find them in your home HomePod is also going to work with Siri Shortcuts, a feature coming in iOS 12. According to Cook, Siri Shortcuts will 'open up a world of apps' for HomePod. Many of these new features are additions that HomePod users have been hoping for.

The HomePod has been the butt of jokes for not being able to support more than one timer at once, and while it could be used as a speakerphone previously, the new phone call functionality will expand its usefulness as a standalone communication device. All of Apple's fall software updates are set to be released on Monday, September 17, with the exception of macOS Mojave, which will see a release on September 24. Just make a homepod without siri.

I just want a nice Apple AirPlay2 speaker You know you don't have to use it, right? You can simply use it as a speaker system if you like. Using your voice: LIST=1. Say 'Hey Siri, stop listening.' '. When Siri asks you to confirm, say 'Yes.' Using the Home app: LIST=1.

Launch the Home app on your iPhone or iPad Home screen. Tap on the Rooms tab, bottom middle.

Swipe to the Room that contains your HomePod. Long press (or firmly press) on your HomePod. Tap Details. Toggle Listen for 'Hey Siri' off. Do you own either? Or just going off specs. If I had to choose just one I would choose the beam.

The price difference is not large, and it does sound great. But more importantly it’s connection options are far superior. That’s my opinion after owning both. I do not say the same about sonos one. I don’t really appreciate the name, as I think it’s an attempt to imply it’s something it’s not. It’s fine for a sound bar, but you consider it great for music? Maybe paired with a sub.

If I wanted Sonos I’d rather spend the extra money for a play:five.
