We have an application from Xerox which is called the GSN. However, they say they cannot install it in a Domain because it has to have local users rights. Well, when we do it - we get an error but if we add the domain user to the local admin group the application runs fine. What type of secuirty risks would we be looking at here and is there any other way I could accomplish this? Maybe using a Software Restriction Policy? Any help would be great! This is the ONLY thing holding us back to move from a Workgroup to a Domain.
You can install it on a Domain PC, but the user has to have local PC rights. First try giving full control of the Program Files Folder and all subfolders to the domain user account and see if it works.
I have gotten around many software rights-restrictions by doing this. If that doesn't make it work, you a a registry permissions issue.
Try to stay away from that and find a better work around. Maybe if the app only needs to be on one PC, you leave it off the domain and restrict the rest of it. If multiple users are using it, maybe they use a local account only when they need to run the app. Just because your pc is on a domain, does not mean that you cannot log on locally and run a local account without logging onto te domain. Having users as a local admin isn't the best scenario, but sometimes it is necessary. When they service they will have to call an IT person over to enter local admin rights to setup / update software.
Force them to follow your will not theirs. Basically if they want to do business with the company they have to follow the corporate policies you have on your network. Xerox software will run fine with limited permissions. Just depends on which software. Most of it rarely needs updates and will be fine without updates for 2-4 years at a time.
Can't seem to find much out about that program. Part of a document management system feeding docs to a central location? In the past I've set up scanning workstations as domain PC's extremely restricted but with domain accounts running them. Trick here was their default domain account wasn't domain user. They were given a custom default / primary domain group account which had some interesting restrictions but gave access to dump files to certain share locations but much more restricted than domain users default had. Another Option: Create a local admin account on the PC. Don't use this account for daily use only use this account when new software is ready to be installed.
Navigate to the cd / update file right click and 'run as' let them use those credentials for updates only. Explain the process for them and change the password randomly when you feel like it. That way they won't be just running under that account. When you join a domain the only thing that changes is that the group membership is managed centrally. You can still create local users as much as you want on a PC, they just wont be in the domain.
It is a common thing to do with Services and applications. Create a local user not in the domain to manage a piece of software.
But creating a user in the domain with local admin access to a PC temporarily is also acceptable, as long as the admin access is revoked as soon as the admin proceedure is done. At this point you just need to research what rights the account needs and grant them in a granular fashion to that domain user. The admin access is just so the install application can read and write to the software key of the registry and create the proper NTFS folders with permissions. Funny so you are the Authorized Dealer and your Techs are telling you 'It can't be on a domain'. Wow and I'm flame thrower mad when they come out to my client sites and tell them that. Yes give security group RW access to program folders. After installed as local admin.
Then when updates are needed they either call you / admin to install them or they can call you for the password of the day (love it when its password and they get all 'who's on first' another fun password is 'whats your password' with spaces and all. That is the easy way. So they don't just update whatever whenever. Because if they have that control you'll start seeing DVDCopy programs and other IM crap showing up all the time! I am an all XP Pro SP3 shop and its a common problem. Ususally the cause is an app that wants to write to either the windows or program files folders. While I hate to do this, what I do is give domain users read write access to these folders (starting with just the program files folder the app is installed in).

They don't usually need full control. For those pesky apps that still won't run, use runas.exe. Create or modify a shortcut with the command line: runas.exe /noenv /savecred /user:/ '. /noenv prevents loading the local admin environment which takes time and probably looses your user's drive mappings; /savecred prompts for the user local admin password the first time (which you enter) and not thereafter so the user never sees it.
Its a bit of kludge, but its the only solution for our time/billing/GL app. Kenny8416 wrote: As part of my PC base build I add a domain global group called WS Admins to the local administrators group on the PC.
That way you can control who has local admin rights by adding or removing them from the domain WS Admins group as and when required. Problem with this configuration I've found.
Lets say user A is local admin on PC A. He now has control of all base PC builds. Basically he can do pc'whatever' and have full access. Only a viable solution if you lock the user to PC's which is possible but more configuration during account creation.

But possible. Even gives them full control of remote access to other pc's that have that group. Harry4506 wrote: I am an all XP Pro SP3 shop and its a common problem.
